The European Council on Monday agreed on the bloc’s new defense strategy for the period to 2030.
The new strategy includes the creation of a rapid response force of 5,000 people to deal with crises.
The document claims that the EU’s defense and security capabilities will “complement” NATO’s capabilities.
According to the strategy, “a stronger European Union in terms of defense and security will contribute to strengthening global and transatlantic security,” where NATO’s capabilities are “fundamental”.
The European Union also plans to develop a strategy for cyber and space security.
The new strategy is expected to be formally approved at the EU leaders’ summit meeting in Brussels on 24-25 March.
The formulation of the strategy, High Commissioner for Foreign Affairs and Security Josep Borrell’in under his supervision since 2020.
