A new independent audit raises problems with the proportion of fake accounts on Twitter. In a high-profile showdown, Elon Musk announced the suspension of the takeover of Twitter until the network social “proves” to him that he has less than 5% of fake accounts. Elon Musk suspects that this share is much higher, which, if confirmed, could help the entrepreneur reduce the cost of the takeover. According to current Twitter CEO Parag Argawal, “on according to an internal estimate over the past four quarters, we have consistently been well below 5%,” and added: “Unfortunately, we do not believe this estimate can be made by an external third party, car for this, private and public data (which we cannot share) is badly needed. Outwardly, it’s not even possible to see which accounts are considered daily active and monetized accounts.”

The statement that later prompted Elon Musk to tweet the poop emoji before adding, “So, comment can advertisers know what Twitter is giving them for their money? This is fundamental to Twitter’s financial health,” and adding, “It looks like Twitter should agree to an external audit if their claims are true.” In the hours and days that followed, the Twitter bot issue sparked further backlash from the entrepreneur. Gold, on told you, external audit just supports the problem pointed out by Elon Musk. The SparkToro Audience Analyst studied, among other things, followers from the account of the President of the United States @POTUS. More than 49.3% of them will be “false” according to the firm. followers”, which SparkToro defines as accounts “rarely managed by people who personally write the content of their tweets, who rarely use their activity timeline or otherwise participate in the Twitter ecosystem.” The shocking figure is more than 10 times higher than Twitter’s official estimates. And Elon Musk is even worse: “70.23% followers by @ElonMusk are presumably unreliable and inactive. Which is both above the median […] but does not surprise us for several reasons: larger accounts tend to contain more fakes. followers than others […] broad coverage tends to attract more followers fake and spam than others.” Finally, “accounts that Twitter recommends to new users (which often include @ElonMusk) tend to suffer more from followers fake and spam. But the firm still falls on the figure global much higher than the 5% claimed by Parag Argawal. SparkToro explains: “Between May 13 and May 15, 2022, SparkToro and Followerwonk conducted a joint thorough review of 44,058 active public Twitter accounts in the last 90 days. These accounts have been randomly selected by the machine during set over 130 millions active public accounts. Our analysis determined a share of 19.42% from a fairly conservative definition of fake accounts, nearly four times Twitter’s estimate for Q4 2021.”
