SpaceX CEO Elon Musk said on Monday that the company will request the lifting of sanctions against Iran for providing Starlink satellite broadband services in the country.
Musk’s Twitter comment comes as massive protests are taking place in Iran over the death of a woman while she was in police custody. Some people on Twitter have asked Musk for satellite internet stations.
Access to social media and some content is severely restricted in Iran, and Internet monitoring group NetBlocks reported a “nearly complete” power outage in the capital of the Kurdish region on Monday, tying it to protests.
Musk did not specify which country Starlink would seek a waiver from, but Iran faces wide-ranging sanctions.
