At least 132 people were killed in India when a British colonial-era footbridge collapsed on Sunday evening in the western state of Gujarat, local police said yesterday. Authorities said about 500 people, including women and children, were performing rituals for a major religious celebration on a bridge that crosses a river when the wires supporting it broke shortly after evening, causing the entire structure to collapse into the river. Rajkot District Inspector General Ashok Kumar Yadav said at least 132 people were killed. “To date, 132 people have died as a result of the bridge collapse,” he said. We have not yet received the list of the dead.” Local Kalyanga politician Kondaria told the press that he lost 12 members of his family, including five children, as a result of the natural disaster. According to Yadav, the state has appointed a team of five investigators to investigate the cause of the bridge collapse.
