The head of the Tunisian Ennahda movement, Rashed Ghannouchi, said he was determined to step down as president of the movement at the next conference and would not renew his candidacy.
Ghannouchi made it clear in statements yesterday, Thursday, that the next conference of the movement will evaluate the work of the leadership in the last phase from 2016 as part of a financial and literary report.
He added that after that, he will develop the future policy of the party, and at the third stage of the conference, the leadership that will implement this policy will be elected.
He continued, “As for the question of a change in leadership or a change of number one in the party, at least that’s the question.”
He stressed that “according to the current law, the leader of the movement has completed his meetings, which means that he is a candidate for a change, and one of his brothers or sisters can replace him,” as he put it.
On the possibility of issuing a law to re-nominate him for the presidency of the movement, Ghannouchi stated that “the conference has the right to revise the party law and the conference is its own master, but I am determined to make room for one of the brothers or sisters.”
Speaking about his relationship with Tunisian President Kais Syed, Ghannouchi indicated that he had no problems with the President of the Republic.
He continued, “But we have a problem with his policy of unilateral rule, and that’s what the Tunisian people reject.”
And he added: “The passage of this path will harm him and the people. Therefore, we call for a national dialogue instead of confrontation, and we want the path of dialogue.”
