Former Syria international Nader Johadar died at the age of 45 when the building he lived in in the coastal city of Jableh collapsed in a massive earthquake that hit the country at dawn on Monday, according to what the Syrian Football Association announced at the time as sporting events have been suspended until further notice. The General Sports Federation, the highest sports body, has announced the suspension of “all sporting events and activities until further notice and every effort to help the citizens affected by the earthquake that hit Syria at dawn today.” The earthquake that struck several Syrian cities and originated in Turkey caused dozens of buildings to collapse, killing 592 people.
For its part, the Syrian Ministry of Information reported on its official Twitter page: “The death of Al-Orub Al-Halabi basketball player Albert Tankjian and his mother as a result of an earthquake that hit the country at dawn today.” On the cessation of sports activities in the country, Salah Ramadan, head of the Syrian Football Association, told AFP: “Stopping all local football tournaments for all categories and classes.”
