At least eight people died last night in an earthquake in northeastern Afghanistan, and an official was quoted by the official news agency as saying the death toll could rise.
“The earthquake on Sunday night resulted in material and human casualties in Kunar province,” Maulvi Najibullah Khanif, director of media and culture in Kunar province and spokesman for the provincial governor, told Bakhtar news agency, adding that the toll could rise.
The USGS recorded a 5.3 magnitude earthquake near the eastern Afghan city of Jalalabad early Monday morning.
Afghanistan is still reeling from the effects of a massive earthquake that killed more than 1,000 people and destroyed villages in the east of the country in June.
