Cuba Denies Deal with China to Set Up Spy Base on US Soil
Cuba’s deputy foreign minister, Carlos Fernandez de Cosio, confirmed his country’s denial of a deal with China to set up a Chinese military base to spy on the US.
False and Unsubstantiated Information
“The American Wall Street Journal published on June 8 completely false and unsubstantiated information, according to which there is an agreement between Cuba and China in the military sphere in order to create a base for espionage,” the deputy minister said in a statement on Twitter.
He added: “All these lies are being promoted on the basis of malicious intent to justify the tightening of the blockade (against Cuba), the aggression against Cuba, and to deceive the opinion of the American and world community.”
Reports of a Secret Agreement
Earlier Thursday, White House strategic communications coordinator John Kirby said reports of a secret agreement between Cuba and China to set up a spy base on US soil were completely untrue.
Bloomberg reported that the White House called erroneous information and reports that Cuba and China have established a special base for espionage off the coast of the United States.
John Kirby also added: “The US administration is closely following China’s attempts to increase its influence in the West and is preparing to take all possible steps to stop this threat.”
Pentagon Declines to Comment
For its part, the Pentagon also declined Thursday to comment on a report that China intends to establish a surveillance base in Cuba off the coast of the United States and could listen to communications southeast of the United States.
