The COP27 climate summit kicked off yesterday in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, after a harsh year of weather-related natural disasters that called for urgent concrete action.
Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shukri took over the chairmanship of the conference from COP26 President Dr. Alok Sharma. The summit is held for 13 days, representatives of 200 countries take part in it, and the presidents meet today and tomorrow.
Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi stressed that Egypt is looking forward to seeing COP27 move from a promise phase to an implementation phase with concrete action on the ground.
On his official Facebook page, Al-Sisi said: “With pride and honor, the responsibility lies; Looking forward to the opening of the 27th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change in Sharm El Sheikh (COP 27).
In his speech, Shukri said that the COP27 climate summit will create the best conditions for combating climate change, stressing that Egypt will spare no effort to lead international action on climate change. He added: “The current climate situation calls for urgent international action.”
