After Russia’s recognition of independence from Ukraine, US President Joe Biden signed a decree banning Americans from engaging in trade, investment and economic activities in Donetsk and Luhansk.
A White House official said the executive order allows “to impose sanctions on anyone working with these Ukrainian regions.”
He added on Tuesday that the US administration will “take additional measures to hold Russia accountable for this violation of international law and violation of Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.”
In a letter to congressional leaders regarding the executive order, Biden noted that Russia’s decision to recognize the peoples’ independence of Donetsk and Luhansk from Ukraine “presents an extraordinary threat to the national security and foreign policy of the United States.”
On Monday, February 21, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that Russia recognized the independence of the self-proclaimed Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics in eastern Ukraine in 2014.
