Two US officials said Monday that US President Joe Biden has authorized the redeployment of several hundred US troops to Somalia, more than a year after his predecessor, Donald Trump, ordered their withdrawal.
Prior to Trump’s decision, the United States had about 700 troops in Somalia who were focused on helping local forces defeat al-Qaeda-linked insurgent al-Shabaab.
Biden’s decision comes hours after former Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud became president again in a vote by lawmakers on Sunday amid fears of a militant attack.
In July 2021, the US military carried out the first air raid on terrorists from the Somali al-Shabaab movement under US President Joe Biden.
The media accused the administration of US President Joe Biden of slowing down operations against al-Shabaab militants in Somalia during his first months in office.
