Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir responded on Wednesday to US President Joe Biden’s criticism of the Israeli government’s handling of the protest crisis over the so-called “judicial reform” law.
Ben Gvir said that Israel is independent of the United States and that Biden’s criticism is misplaced.
He added: “We respect the democratic system in the United States, but they must understand that Israel is an independent country and not just another star on the American flag.”
“It should be clear to countries around the world that the people here in Israel have held elections and expressed their will,” Ben Gvir continued.
Biden said he was “very concerned” about judicial reform, adding that Israel “cannot continue down this path,” adding that he would not invite Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to the White House anytime soon.
Netanyahu responded by emphasizing that “Israel is a sovereign state that makes decisions according to the will of its people, and not based on pressure from outside, including from best friends.”
