President Joe Biden has warned American voters that the future of democracy is at stake in next week’s midterm elections, with some Republican candidates refusing to recognize the results of the vote, paving the way for “chaos in America.”
As conservatives criticize his administration over the economic situation, the 79-year-old Democrat has targeted Republicans, who have joined former President Donald Trump in denying a Biden victory in the 2020 election.
“There are candidates vying for office at every level in America … who are not committed to accepting the results of the elections they run,” Biden said in a televised address.
He added that their goal was to follow Trump’s approach and try to “sabotage the electoral system,” noting that more than 300 anti-election Republicans are racing across the country this year. “They encouraged political violence and intimidation of voters and election officials,” he said, less than two years after Trump supporters attempted to storm the Capitol to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election.
“This opens the way to chaos in America,” Biden said. “This is unprecedented, illegal, and un-American.”
Biden’s warnings about threats to democracy came six days before Tuesday’s midterm elections, in which Republicans are likely to control the House of Representatives and possibly the Senate.
