Barcelona have extended Uruguayan international defender Ronald Araujo’s contract until 2026, the Catalan club said in a statement on Tuesday.
Barcelona have set the value of the punitive clause in the 23-year-old Uruguayan’s contract at one billion euros, a fictitious amount similar to the amount set for its recently renewed contracts such as Ansu Fati and Badri. in the summer of 2018 from the Boston River in Uruguay.
The Catalan club announced the contract extension via a video posted on Twitter showing Araujo sipping mate (a popular hot drink in South America) with 2026 stamped on the mug.
The Uruguayan has been a mainstay of Barcelona’s defense since Xavi took over as team manager last November, replacing Dutchman Ronald Koeman, and has made 39 appearances in all competitions this season.
