Jordi Cruyff, the son of the late Dutch football legend Johan, announced on Tuesday that he is ending his duties as director of football at Spanish club Barcelona when his contract expires at the end of the current season.
“Jordi Cruyff will not renew his contract at the end of the season due to his desire to pursue new professional projects,” Barcelona said in a statement about the 49-year-old Jordi, who defended the colors of the Blaugrana for several seasons in the nineties.
He added: “That’s what he said this morning to club president Joan Laporte in an emotional meeting where Cruyff discussed his departure in search of new challenges after two seasons at Barcelona.
He continued: “The Club thanks Jordi Cruyff for his important contribution as a member of the Sports Committee and wishes him every success in his new professional career.”
Jordi Cruyff, appointed to his position in September 2021, was closer to the first team than sporting director Matteo Alemany, who announced earlier this month that he would leave the Catalan club on July 1 next year.
