Azerbaijan announced on Monday that its embassy in Iran would “temporarily” cease operations, three days after it was attacked in which one person died and two were injured. The Iranian police, referring to “personal” motives, Baku condemned the “terrorist” attack on its diplomatic mission.
“The work of the Azerbaijani embassy has been temporarily suspended following the evacuation of employees and their families from Iran,” Ayksan Hajizade, a spokesman for the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry, told AFP.
He added: “This does not mean a break in diplomatic relations,” noting that the Azerbaijani Consulate General in the city of Tabriz in northwestern Iran “continues its work.”
Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev on Saturday in a telephone conversation with his Iranian counterpart Ibrahim Raisi expressed the hope that “this terrorist act will be subjected to a thorough investigation.”
The Tehran police announced the arrest of the attacker, an Iranian married to an Azerbaijani.
