The Foreign Ministry said earlier that the shooting was the result of Tehran’s failure to respond to its demands for increased security. The ministry left only 5 people in the embassy to guard the building.
Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev called the attack on his country’s embassy in Iran a “terrorist act”, calling for an urgent investigation and punishment of those responsible for the attack. The attack comes amid rising tensions between the two neighbors over Iran’s treatment of its large Azeri minority, as well as Azerbaijan’s decision this month to appoint its first ambassador to Israel.
