MADRID, 7-8-2022 (AFP) — Atlético Madrid have signed Brazilian striker Samuel Leno from Portuguese club Gil Vicente for five seasons, the Spanish capital club announced on Friday.
“Following an agreement between our club and the Portuguese club Gil Vicente, Samuel Leno has become a new player in the ranks of Atlético Madrid. The Brazilian striker has signed a five-year contract,” Atlético said in a statement on their official website.
This is the second deal for Atlético Madrid in preparation for next season, after signing Belgian defensive midfielder Axel Witsel.
Leno, 22, started his career with Brazil’s San Bernardo and Flamengo and arrived in Portugal in 2019. He faces strong competition at Atlético where Belgian winger Yannick Carrasco plays in the same position.
Leno scored 13 goals and provided 5 assists in 37 games in various competitions, which contributed to Gil Vicente’s fifth place in the Portuguese league and thus participation in the Conference League the following season.
