At least 60 people died after freight train derailment in the democratic republic of Congo (DRC), a official said Saturday.
The accident has happened on late friday in the territory of Lubudi in Lualaba province.
“The preliminary report indicates that seven bodies have been recovered by the families, 53 others are still at the scene of the accident,” said Jean-Serge Lumu, a provincial. official told reporters.
Numerous of the injured, including an underage child of 2 of which parents deceased in the accident, were transported to the nearby hospital in Lubudi, he added.
The train was heading from the town of Mueneditu towards Lubumbashi.
Although the freight train is not licensed to carry passengers, reports indicate that it carried “illegal passengers”.
