An earthquake measuring 5.9 on the Richter scale hit the Baikal basin in the Irkutsk region in eastern Russia today, and a statement from the Department of Geophysics of the Russian Academy of Sciences said the quake hit at 10:35 Moscow time, and was 18 kilometers from the village of Bolshoe Goloostnoye, Irkutsk province, in Siberia, in the east of Russia.
There were no reports of human casualties or property damage as a result of the earthquake.
