Algerian President Abdel Majid Tebbun Announces Strategic Partnership with Russia
During his recent visit to Moscow, Algerian President Abdel Majid Tebbun signed eight treaties with Russian President Vladimir Putin covering a range of sectors including judiciary, agriculture, communications, and culture. However, space exploration for “peaceful purposes” was not included in the partnership.
Historic Relations Between Algeria and Russia
Algeria has maintained special relations with Russia since the time of the former USSR during the war for independence from France (1954-1962). These relations have continued to be strengthened with the recent strategic partnership announcement.
Accelerating Entry into BRICS
At the end of the visit, President Tebbun expressed his desire to accelerate Algeria’s entry into the BRICS organization due to its potential benefits for the Algerian economy. BRICS, which includes Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, is a prominent global political and economic block that many countries in the Middle East are interested in joining.
President Tebbun’s Political Background
President Tebbun is an experienced Algerian politician, having previously served as Prime Minister of Algeria in the 2017 government. Prior to that, he held various positions in the state, including Minister of Housing, Urbanization, and Communications in several governments.
