Today, Wednesday, the Saudi representative to the UN, Abdulaziz al-Wazel, expressed deep concern over the failure of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) inspections of Iran’s nuclear facilities.
Al-Wazel added that “Iran’s lack of transparency in relations with the International Atomic Energy Agency violates the UN Charter”, stressing that “transparency is essential in the peaceful use of nuclear energy.”
In his speech at a UN conference on nuclear non-proliferation, al-Wazel indicated that Saudi Arabia supports all efforts to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.
Al-Wazel said that “Iran’s practices increase the risks of nuclear proliferation” and also “Israel’s non-adherence to the treaty increases the risks of nuclear proliferation.”
He stressed “the need to counter the proliferation of nuclear weapons in the Middle East” because “the danger of nuclear proliferation threatens the Middle East and the whole world”, believing that “a Middle East free of nuclear weapons is a collective responsibility”.
The Saudi representative to the UN also expressed the Kingdom’s support for expanding the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.
