US officials said al-Qaeda leader in Afghanistan Ayman al-Zawahiri was killed in a US raid.
A US official confirmed to Reuters that al-Zawahiri is believed to have been killed in a US intelligence airstrike in Afghanistan over the weekend.
Meanwhile, a senior US official announced earlier today, Monday, that the United States had conducted a “successful” operation against “an important al-Qaeda target” in Afghanistan.
The official also said that “over the weekend, the United States carried out an operation against an important al-Qaeda target in Afghanistan as part of the fight against terrorism.”
He noted that “the operation was successful, there were no civilian casualties,” according to Agence France-Presse.
In parallel, two US officials told Reuters today that the Central Intelligence Agency carried out a drone strike in Afghanistan over the weekend.
The two officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity, added that the strike took place in Kabul on Sunday. They did not provide details about the target or casualties.
The CIA declined to comment.
On Monday, the White House announced that President Joe Biden would give a speech tonight announcing the details of a successful counterterrorism operation.
