Today, Thursday, US Ambassador to Sudan John Godfrey presented his credentials to Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, head of Sudan’s Sovereign Council, to become the first US ambassador to the country in nearly 25 years.
“As you know, the US ambassador to Sudan has been gone for over 25 years,” Godfrey said in a statement posted on the US embassy’s Facebook page.
Godfrey added that “his arrival in Khartoum reflects the United States’ commitment to deepening relations between the Sudanese and American peoples,” noting that ties between the two peoples are central to any bilateral relationship.
He stressed the need for the Sudanese army to stay out of politics after the Sudanese government is established in the country, calling on all political forces to enter into a comprehensive dialogue to form a new civilian government.
In 2020, the United States removed Sudan from its list of state sponsors of terrorism, nearly three decades after Washington listed Sudan as a state sponsor of terrorism in 1993 and accused former Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir of supporting and harboring terrorist groups, including among the terrorist organization Al-Qaeda, banned in Russia.
