The wife of ousted Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir has returned to the fore after appearing before a Corruption Court judge in the capital Khartoum to clear up some issues related to allegations of land and property ownership through illicit enrichment. .
Today, Sunday, Khartoum Corruption Court Judge Moez Babiker questioned al-Bashir’s wife, Vedad Babiker, who confirmed that most of what she owned was a gift from her current husband and an oath she bought with money from her ex ex-husband.
Babiker also made it clear in her response to the judge’s private questions about her ownership of several housing units that she received 6 of them as a gift from Al-Bashir after the latter sold the housing unit in the upscale Kafuri area. She also added that he bought 12 apartments at their price in another area, gave 6 of them to his first wife, and registered 6 more in her name. She indicated that she had bought two other apartments with contributions from her ex-husband, Ibrahim Shams al-Din, after his death.

Regarding the jewels she owned, she said she received them as gifts from her ex-husband and current husband, as well as gifts from her daughters’ husbands, noting that she had proof that all the land and jewels she received were obtained legally. .
For his part, Hashem Abu Bakr al-Jali, al-Bashir’s wife’s lawyer, told Al-Arabiya/Al-Hadas that he expected the judge to press charges against al-Bashir’s wife.
He also added that he has “a line of defense that will prove that his client received housing legally.”
The court is expected to decide at its hearing next Sunday whether it will file charges of corruption and illicit enrichment or dismiss the case.

Vedad Babiker has been charged with misdemeanors and possession of residential land and real estate in violation of section 7 of the Prohibition of Property Act and has been under house arrest for health reasons since her previous release.
