Sri Lankan police have arrested suspects in setting fire to the prime minister’s home after protests in Colombo on Saturday that saw the country’s president flee shortly before the presidential residence was stormed.
Sri Lankan social media has been flooded with videos showing a crowd of demonstrators storming the presidential residence. The protesters then held a party at the home of President Gotabay Rajapaksa, where they spent time swimming in his pool, exercising at the gym, wrestling in his bed and taking souvenir photos in his office.
Earlier, the fugitive president signed a decree on the accelerated distribution of gas in Sri Lanka and resumed the supply of fuel to gas stations. Previously, there was no gasoline, and the army guarded the stations. Sri Lanka is facing its worst economic crisis since independence in 1948, and last week Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa sent a letter to the Russian President asking for cooperation between the two countries on oil purchases.
