The United Nations Special Rapporteur on Human Rights in Myanmar urged arms exporting countries to stop their sales to this Asian country, and urged the Security Council to hold an emergency meeting to discuss and vote on the resolution.
Tom Andrews has published a report titled “Supporting Atrocities: Weapons Transfers from UN Member States to the Myanmar Army,” identifying countries that have supplied the Human Rights Council with weapons used against civilians since the military coup in Myanmar.
“It is indisputable that weapons used to kill civilians should no longer be transferred to Myanmar. Stopping the junta’s horrific crimes begins with preventing its access to weapons. The longer the world delays, the more innocent people will be,” he said. To die, including children, in Myanmar.”
“The people of Myanmar are calling on the United Nations to take action. They deserve to vote on a Security Council resolution that would stop the sale of weapons used to kill them. Many families find themselves targeted by weapons of war supplied by member states. This must stop.”
The report also lists the names of countries that have allowed arms transfers since 2018, when the Myanmar military’s crimes against the Rohingya Muslim minority were widely documented and the United Nations fact-finding mission called for an immediate arms embargo.
