Today, Sunday, the British Foreign Secretary praised the efforts of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Sultanate of Oman to free a Briton detained by al-Houthi in April 2017.
“I am delighted that Luke Simmons, who has been illegally held by the Houthis in Yemen without charge or trial since 2017, has been released and will soon be reunited with his family,” Liz Truss tweeted.
She also continued, “I thank our partners in Saudi Arabia and Oman for his release.”
Also, British Minister of State for the Middle East and North Africa, James Cleverley, said via his Twitter account that the efforts of Saudi Arabia and Oman contributed to the reunification of Simmons and his family.
Houthi militia detained Luke Simmons in the capital Sana’a on charges of spying for Britain (although he was never formally charged in court), a claim his family vehemently denies.
His family said Simmons, 29, broke his arm during interrogation trying to get him to confess, noting that his physical and mental health deteriorated in solitary confinement.
