The hijab struggle in India has reached the most populous state, Uttar Pradesh, when a group of teenagers at a university demanded a hijab ban.
Uttar Pradesh, whose population is estimated to be on par with Brazil, is ruled in state politics by a Hindu monk of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
In the northern state of Uttar Pradesh, a group of more than two dozen youths went to the Dharma Samaj College in Aligra district, sending a note to authorities calling for a complete ban on headscarves inside buildings.
Religious attire is not currently allowed in classrooms but may be worn elsewhere on campus.
In the south Indian city of Karnataka, authorities closed colleges last week after banning female students from wearing hijabs in classrooms sparked protests from Muslim students and counter-protests from their Hindu peers. The headscarf ban came as part of a policy that imposed a uniform dress code for female students.
India’s Muslim minority, which represents about 13 percent of the country’s population, sees the issue as an attempt to marginalize it by the authorities.
The ruling party draws its support mainly from the Hindu majority, which makes up about 80 percent of India’s population of about 1.4 billion.
