Speaking to Anadolu Agency (AA), Hasan Hakan Yavaşoğlu, the expedition’s deputy leader, said that the team was “ready and motivated to do research.” “Our team is currently completing research in field. Like of today we will start our scientific studies,” Yavaşoğlu said. “This year14 scientific projects will be carried out out during the execution of our expedition. Studies on life sciences, earth sciences and physical sciences will be conducted during the expedition, it added.
In the framework of of a cooperation between the Antarctic Institute of Bulgaria and the Institute of the Marmara Research Center of the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TÜBİTAK MAM) of Arctic Research, Oleg Vasiliev, who served as station chief of Saint Kliment Ohridsky, joined the Turkish team.
“The fact that our station is located on Dismal Island…is important for detection of movement of Antarctic Plate”, Captain Ilyas Akpınar, a military officer of the direction General of Turkey of Cartography who is among the members of the team, noted. “It will be also activate us contribute to Antarctica earth scientific literature”.
Akpinar also says that during the third expedition from Turkey in 2019, geodynamics points have been established on Dismal Island and Horseshoe Island and GNSS observations were made out to these points for four to 12 hours. Turkey has three fixed GNSS stations in this region on the Antarctic continent, he said, adding that one of them is located on Dismal Island, while the other two are on Horseshoe Island.
