The United National Movement of Pakistan (MQM) joined the opposition on Wednesday, a move that will lead to the removal of Prime Minister Imran Khan from power in an upcoming no-confidence vote.
United National Movement leader Nasreen Jalil announced her party’s decision to join the opposition at a press conference early Wednesday.
The movement only has five seats in parliament, but the move would make Khan’s opponents more than 172 needed to topple him in a vote next week.
This development is likely to be a fatal blow to Khan, who is facing a revolt by dozens of lawmakers from his party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, who have publicly pledged to vote against him.
Khan, who came to power in 2018 with 342 to 176 votes in the National Assembly (lower house of parliament), was expected to address the nation on Wednesday evening, but delayed it after a meeting with the chief of staff.
