A German parliamentarian said his country could pay for Russian gas supplies in rubles, but would have to violate European Union sanctions on Russia’s Central Bank by doing so.
“Germany will have to buy rubles from the Central Bank of Russia and thus circumvent its sanctions,” Klaus Ernst, Chairman of the Federal Parliament’s Climate and Energy Committee, told the Russian newspaper RBK.
He added that the freezing of Russia’s assets abroad could be considered a violation of agreements with Russia.
