Rep. Ritchie Torres Supports Unconditional U.S. Aid for Israel
Rep. Ritchie Torres, a Democratic representative from New York, has expressed his unwavering support for Israel amid its ongoing conflict with the terrorist group Hamas. In contrast to the statements made by two of his fellow House progressives, Torres believes that the United States should provide “unconditional” aid to Israel during this critical time.
According to Capitol Hill reporter Marc Rod, Torres emphasized the importance of U.S. support, stating, “U.S. aid to Israel is and should be unconditional, and never more so than in this moment of critical need.” He called on Congress to take decisive action in providing Israel with whatever it requires to defend itself against unprecedented acts of terrorism.
Rejecting the Glorification of Violence
Torres also criticized those who glorify acts of violence and called out anyone who would refer to the recent attacks on Jews as “resistance.” He described such actions as reprehensible and repulsive, highlighting the significance of acknowledging the gravity of the situation.
A Contrast in Views
These remarks from Torres came in response to the contrasting views expressed by two members of the far-left House group known as the “Squad.” These representatives, Rep. Cori Bush of Missouri and Rep. Rashida Tlaib of Michigan, appeared to blame Israel for the attacks and called for an end to U.S. aid to the Jewish state.
Rep. Cori Bush’s Perspective
Bush initially lamented the violence and loss of lives on both sides but then shifted her focus to achieving a just and lasting peace. She proposed ending U.S. government support for the Israeli military occupation and apartheid, aligning her position with that of Tlaib.
Rep. Rashida Tlaib’s Stance
Tlaib specifically condemned the “unconditional funding” provided to Israel, referring to it as an “apartheid government.” She expressed her grief for both Palestinian and Israeli lives lost and called for lifting the blockade, ending the occupation, and dismantling the apartheid system that she believes creates oppressive conditions leading to resistance.
Ongoing Conflict and Losses
The current conflict between Israel and Hamas has resulted in significant casualties. As of Monday morning, at least 800 Israelis have died, while the Palestinian Health Ministry reports over 300 deaths in Gaza, including 20 children. Both sides anticipate further losses as they brace for a potentially prolonged and extensive war.
