Three Turkish scientists received the “Special Prize for the fight against the global pandemic of COVID-19” on Monday, which is marked as Medicine Day in the country.
The Turkish Academy of Sciences (TÜBA), a leading scientific bodyremis out awards to two professors and one associate professor who are greeted for their achievements regarding treatment and diagnosis of the coronavirus. During a ceremony in the capital Ankara, the prizes were awarded to professor Aykut Özdarendeli, partner professor Urartu Özgür Şafak Şeker and professor Tanil Kocagoz.
Özdarendeli was rewarded for his work on Turkovac, Turkey first vaccine against the coronavirus and the first locally-made blow in decades. the professor leads a team at the University of Erciyes of Turkey for development of the vaccine, which recently received emergency use approval and became the third vaccine available in the country. Özdarendeli, who has been also awarded by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan on another day of medicine eventa declared at the ceremony that Turkey had ended mass production of vaccines in 1997 and their work started when the first a case of coronavirus has been reported in Turkey back in 2020. He hailed the work of “a great number of people” in the development of the vaccine. “We are talking about a vaccine that has received emergency approval, under pandemic conditions and over a period of about 20 months, a vaccine whose production has reached about 1 million monthly doses and has been delivered to 81 provinces. It’s a miraculous process,” he said.
Associate professor Seker won the award for his work on the development of RNA key systems for the diagnosis of COVID-19[FEMININEŞekerasaidthebiotechnologyhewasusinginthediagnosis[FEMININEŞekeradéclaréquelabiotechnologiequ’ilutilisaitinlediagnosticsystem was a business of national security, “something better understood during the pandemic”. Şeker said Turkey has human potential capable of developing innovative ideas in research and development in biotechnology. “We can use this potential by creating an ecosystem as it is in software development,” he said.
Professor Kocagöz was recognized for his work on COVID-19 tests by mouthwash. In a video message to eventdit Kocagoz using nasal and oral swabs in the coronavirus test had their challenges corn son project facilitated the work. “You can test anyonesame children to a very young age. Only you need 20 milliliters (0.68 ounces) of drink spit water out by the person tested,” he said of son project. Kocagöz emphasized that he was providing a more “sensitive” way to diagnose the infection and planned to use this for other illnesses too in the future.
