TikTok Announces Measures to Comply with EU’s Digital Services Act
TikTok reporting made easy
Among the changes announced by TikTok to comply with the DSA is a new reporting system. In the coming weeks, TikTok will introduce an additional reporting system for its European community. This system will allow users to report content they consider illegal, including promotional content. Users will be able to choose from a list of categories such as hate speech, harassment, or financial crimes. To facilitate this process, a guide will be provided. If any reported content is found to violate platform rules, it will be removed globally.
More transparent moderation
Another change concerns video moderation on TikTok. The social network will be more transparent to creators when content is removed. TikTok will provide more details about its decisions, notify the removal of content by an automated moderation system, and provide information about comment appeal the decisions of the moderators.
Personal recommendations become optional
Applying the DMA will also affect the For You TikTok feed, which currently recommends videos based on user interests. Soon, users in Europe will be able to choose a non-personalized “For You” feed based only on popular content in their area of residence or in the world, excluding interest centers.
Advertising changes
TikTok is also changing the way it shows ads to teens. The social network will no longer display interest-based personalized ads on the screens of users aged 13 to 17. However, TikTok reminds users that they can already manage advertising and opt out of personalized advertising if they choose to do so.
As the EU prepares to implement the DSA, TikTok is taking proactive steps to ensure compliance with these new rules. These changes in content reporting, moderation, and recommendations aim to protect users and create a safer environment for all TikTok users in Europe. With these measures in place, TikTok is demonstrating its commitment to meeting the regulatory requirements and prioritizing user safety and privacy.
