A journalist from the United States was shot dead in Ukraine, the head of Kyiv regional police said on Sunday, adding that another one was wounded in Russian attacks on the city of Irpin.
The reporter was identified as New York Times reporter Brent Anthony Renaud, according to the head of the Kyiv region Andrei Nebitov police. Renaud was 50 years old.
Danylo Shapovalov, a volunteer surgeon for ukrainian territory defense mentioned one of the Americans died instantly and he had treated the other.
Times deputy editor Cliff Levy expressed his condolences and said the paper was “deeply saddened to learn of the death of an American journalist in Ukraine, Brent Renaud.”
“Brent was a talented photographer and filmmaker, but he was not on mission for @NYTimes in Ukraine,” he wrote. in Twitter.
“Although he contributed to the Times in the past (more recently in 2015), he was not on mission for any bureau from the Times in Ukraine. Early reports that he was working for The times flowed because he was wearing a Times press badge that has been issued for a mission many years ago,” the Times statement said on Sunday.
