Idris Elba Wants to Make a Luther Sequel at Netflix
Idris Elba, who plays Luther, wants to make a follow-up to the Netflix movie Luther: The Fallen Sun, which came out earlier this year.
Andy Serkis played the bad guy in the movie. When it was over, Elba’s Luther had won over his enemies but was returning to jail. But right at the end, it seems like an MI5 spy gives Luther a job so he doesn’t have to go back to jail.
This screams sequel, and in a new interview Apple TV+ series Hijack, Elba said fans should keep their “fingers crossed” for more Luther.
“It went very well. Luther ended up being one of the top five most-watched movies on Netflix, a huge accomplishment since it was the first movie based on the TV show. Elba said, “I hope to make another one.”
He kept going, saying, “I love Luther. I love that character and seeing where his story and he himself can go. So, yeah, keep your fingers crossed.”
The film was a continuation of the popular BBC crime series, and the show’s creator, Neil Cross, recently talked about a change Netflix offered for the movie: making the victim a man.
“It’s been said before that people don’t like how women are treated badly in Luther, and they’re not wrong. Cross said, “For reasons I don’t want to dig into too deeply, the female victims strike a chord and scare me more.”
“In the first draft, there was a defiant part of me that said, ‘Oh, f*** it, the victim is going to be a woman because that’s scarier.\’”
He continued: “And that’s the one time where Netflix said, ‘Do you want to think about this a bit?’ I was afraid it might not be as scary as I thought. But they were actually right.”
