Heavy Rains Cause “Life-Threatening” Floods in New York State
Heavy rains have hit New York state, leading to devastating floods that have turned roads into waterways and washed away bridges. The situation has become so severe that authorities have declared a state of emergency.
State of Emergency Declared
New York State Governor Kathy Hochul has declared a state of emergency in Orange County, located in the northwest of New York, and central Ontario. Governor Hochul has highlighted that the heavy rainfall, amounting to up to 200mm, has caused “life-threatening flooding.” She expressed concern over the approaching dangerous phase of weather conditions and emphasized the seriousness of the situation, stating, “It’s amazing.”
As a result of the floods, more than 12,000 customers were left without power by Sunday evening, according to Governor Hochul’s office.
Townspeople Affected
The heavy rain has inundated roads, making them impassable and leaving townspeople stranded in their cars and houses. The situation has become even more perilous as the water levels continue to rise.
The National Weather Service has reported multiple instances of severe flooding and individuals trapped in vehicles in eastern Orange County. They have urged drivers to exercise extreme caution while navigating the affected areas.
