The International Organization for Migration reports 1.7 million internally displaced persons in Sudan
The crisis in Sudan has resulted in a significant number of internally displaced persons, with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) announcing that the number has reached 1.7 million just two months after the start of the crisis. Along with humanitarian partners, the IOM has distributed life-saving items to approximately 3,000 people who fled to El Obeid in North Kordofan state.
World Food Program provides therapeutic meals to children in Sudan
The World Food Program (WFP) has been providing food assistance and nutritional support to more than 870,000 people since reopening in Sudan six weeks ago. In addition, the program provided therapeutic meals to approximately 170 children who were evacuated to Wad Madani from the Maygoma Orphanage in Khartoum last week.
World Health Organization reports limited access to medical care in Khartoum
The World Health Organization (WHO) reports that less than a fifth of health facilities in Khartoum are fully operational, making it difficult for the public to access medical care and treatment for injuries sustained from the ongoing violence. This lack of access to clean water, food, and sanitation increases the risk of waterborne diseases and malnutrition.
Bureaucratic hurdles prevent WHO from sending experts to Sudan
The WHO notes that bureaucratic hurdles are preventing the organization from sending experts to lead the local health response. Despite this, Sudan’s updated humanitarian response plan for the current year is $2.6 billion to help 18 million people, with the health appeal cost at $178.6 million to help 11 million people. The Sudan Refugee Regional Response Plan requires $470.7 million, of which $10.9 million is for the health sector.
