Trilateral Meeting Held in Ankara
Today, Wednesday, a trilateral meeting was held in Ankara with the participation of Turkey, Finland and Sweden as part of a permanent joint mechanism signed on June 28, 2022 on the sidelines of the NATO summit in Madrid.
Discussion on Sweden’s Commitments
The meeting discussed the steps taken by Sweden in the context of the commitments contained in the tripartite memorandum. In particular, the new law on the activities of terrorist organizations in Sweden adopted by Stockholm and entered into force on June 1, 2023.
Commitments Reached
The commitments reached were also discussed in a tripartite memorandum.
Importance of a Permanent Joint Mechanism
The meeting participants stressed the “importance of a permanent joint mechanism” and agreed to continue working on the next steps.
Turkish Delegation
The Turkish delegation was led by Senior Advisor to the President, Ambassador Akif Çatay Kılıç, and included Deputy Foreign Minister Ambassador Burak Aksabar, as well as representatives from the Ministries of Foreign Affairs, the Interior, National Defense, Justice and the Intelligence Service.
Importance of Finland’s Participation
The Turkish side considers it important that Finland, which joined NATO on April 4, 2023, continues to attend the meetings of this mechanism in order to confirm that the fight against terrorist organizations will continue after NATO membership.
