New Zealand’s parliament unanimously passed a bill on Wednesday that would impose economic sanctions against Russia.
The new law, which was hastily passed, targets people linked to Russia’s military operation in Ukraine, including Russian oligarchs.
The law would allow New Zealand to freeze assets and block access to luxury yachts or planes.
Unlike many countries that already impose sanctions, New Zealand law previously did not allow the government to take meaningful action unless they were part of a broader UN effort.
Lawmakers said this would prevent New Zealand from being a safe haven for Russian oligarchs looking to escape sanctions elsewhere.
