The Pentagon announced on Tuesday that it considers the United States’ offer to deliver Warsaw’s Polish MiG-29 fighter jets to a US airbase in Germany as “inappropriate”.
“We will continue to consult with Poland and our other NATO allies about this issue and the challenges and logistical challenges it poses, but we do not believe Poland’s proposal is viable,” said Steve Kirby, spokesman for the US Department of Defense.
Kirby reasoned that the possibility of placing fighters at the disposal of the United States and launching them from a US base for NATO forces and flying over conflicting airspace with Russia “raises serious concern to the entire North Atlantic Treaty Organization.”
On Tuesday, Washington expressed “surprise” about Poland’s proposal, while US Assistant Secretary of State Victoria Nuland said, referring to the Polish side, “As far as I know, they didn’t consult us beforehand.”
“I think this is a surprising statement on the part of Poles,” he said.
