Spain’s foreign ministry announced on Friday that it had summoned the Russian ambassador to Madrid following the embassy’s “attacks” on the government via Twitter, adding that the decision came especially amid “a Russian embassy tweet critical of Spanish Defense Minister”, Margherita Robles, and demanded to have the government remove the tweet posted on Wednesday, which the embassy agreed to do, according to a spokesperson.
The tweet, which was seen by Agence France-Presse, mentions a statement by Marguerite Robles in which she confirmed that “no army of any NATO country, and Spain is one of them, will ever participate in the war in Ukraine.”
The statement was made on April 12 during a press conference she held in Madrid with her Ukrainian counterpart.
The Russian embassy in Madrid has attached a statement to a video that, according to Spanish media, shows people wearing military uniforms on the battlefield and speaking in Spanish, hinting at the possible presence of the Spanish military in Ukraine.
At a press conference with her French and German counterparts on Friday, Robles reiterated that “there is no army of any NATO country or any Spanish soldier belonging to the Spanish armed forces or the armies of a NATO country in Ukraine.”
“We all know that a country like Russia is currently committing massacres against the people of Ukraine, using all means, including disinformation, in an attempt to undermine the friendship between the member states of the European Union and NATO,” the Spanish defense minister added. .
