Today, Thursday, Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed announced the assassination of a member of the ruling party in the Amhara region, in the north of the country.
“Those who failed to conquer ideas with ideas took the soul of our brother Girma Yeshityel,” Abiy Ahmed wrote on Facebook, accusing “violent extremists” of being behind this “shameful and horrifying” act.
Girma Yeshitila is a member of the executive committee of the Welfare Party led by Abiy Ahmed, while it was not immediately clear where and when the accident occurred.
In Amhara, Ethiopia’s second most populous region, protests took place this month against plans by the federal government to disband the local military.
It is worth noting that the Amharic forces were one of the main allies of the federal army during the two-year war in the neighboring Tigray region, which ended with a peace agreement in November.
