Sony has stated that the PlayStation 3 is still alive and well, so dust-up that old console. Version 4.90 of the new firmware has been made available by the manufacturer for the console, which is almost 17 years old.
Sony’s PlayStation website states, “an update to the PlayStation 3 system software was released on February 28, 2013.” You must have at least 200MB of free space on either the PS3 Hard Disk Drive (System Update) or external storage media (PC Update) to download the update.
You should get comfortable with this one because of what this firmware upgrade accomplishes.
The manufacturer claims that this system software upgrade enhances system performance.
It’s debatable whether it enhances system performance. After all, a 2006-released console can only be improved so much.
The PlayStation 3’s utility is still a console that will be used in 2023. Red Dead Redemption was the most active PlayStation 3 game, according to PS Timetracker. This site doesn’t have the most comprehensive tracking system, but it still provides a reasonable sense of what’s being played. Other games like Grand Theft Auto IV, Call of Duty: Black Ops, and Minecraft continue to enjoy popularity on the system.
