Rescuers managed to pull 3 people alive from under the rubble of a building in the southern Turkish city of Antakya, 296 hours after the devastating earthquake. The rescue team said: “There was a Syrian family of 5 under the rubble, and that the mother and father survived, but later the child died of dehydration, and neither the older sister nor the twin of the child survived,” Atay Usmanov said. a member of the rescue team said: “We heard screams while we were digging an hour ago. When we find people alive, we are always happy.”
Ten ambulances were waiting in a nearby street, which was closed to traffic to facilitate the rescue operation. The workers asked for complete silence and that everyone descend or sit down while the teams climbed to the top of the rubble of the building where the family was found to listen for any further sounds with an electronic detector. As rescue efforts continued, a worker from under the rubble called out, “Take a deep breath if you can hear me.” The workers then abandoned their search when excavators arrived and climbed into the rubble to begin clearing it away.
While many international rescue teams fled the vast quake area, local teams continued to search through the rubble of collapsed buildings yesterday, hoping to find more survivors to make it through. Experts say: Most rescue operations happen within 24 hours of an earthquake.
