An earthquake measuring 7.4 on the Richter scale hit Kahramanmaras province in southern Turkey at dawn today. Turkey’s Emergency and Disaster Management Authority (AFAD) said the quake hit the Pazardik region at a depth of 7 kilometers from the surface of the earth.
Rescuers arrived in the area where the earthquake occurred.
Turkey is located on a deep seismic fault line and has witnessed a large number of earthquakes over the past four decades, one of which occurred near Istanbul in 1999, killing more than 17,000 people and injuring about 45,000.
