The death toll in a suicide attack on Friday’s Kucha Risaldar Shiite mosque in the northwestern Pakistani city of Peshawar rose to 56.
Mohammed Asim Khan, spokesman for the “Lady Reading” Hospital in Peshawar, said that the attack has killed 56 people so far and injured 194, 50 of them seriously.
Peshawar Police Chief Mohammed Ijaz Khan previouslyin He stated that the violence started when two gunmen opened fire on the police outside the mosque in his old city.
Local police official Waheed Khan added that the explosion occurred as worshipers gathered at the mosque for Friday prayers and that the death toll could rise as most of the injured are in critical condition.
Ambulances made their way through crowded narrow streets and took the injured to Lady Reading Hospital, where doctors were working hard to save the injured.
Eyewitnesses said at least 150 worshipers were in the mosque at the time of the explosion.
No one claimed immediate responsibility for the explosion, but ISIS and the Pakistani Taliban militant group had previously carried out similar attacks in the area near the neighboring border with Afghanistan.
