A police officer still on duty in London has confessed to committing 24 rapes as part of the abuse of women in nearly two decades, making him one of the UK’s most numerous sex offenders against his victims, and that he intimidated them by telling them, that any complaint against him would not have been heard.
The Metropolitan Police, already suffering from the collapse of public confidence in them after a series of scandals, apologized for not exposing the abuses earlier.
“This man abused women in the meanest way. It’s disgusting. We have failed women, girls and Londoners too,” said Metropolitan Police Commissioner Mark Rowley.
“We have failed. I’m really sorry. It wasn’t supposed to be a police officer,” he added. Rishi Sunak, spokesman for the Prime Minister of Great Britain, spoke about this.
London Mayor Sadiq Khan said that after Carrick pleaded guilty to 49 counts against 12 victims between 2003 and 2020, important questions needed to be answered.
“This is a terrible case. The Prime Minister expresses solidarity with all those affected,” Sunak’s spokesman said.
“The police must eradicate these officers in order to restore the trust of the society, which has been undermined by such events,” he added.
