Yesterday, Russian President Vladimir Putin held talks with the leaders of Armenia and Azerbaijan following violent clashes between the two countries. This summit in Sochi, southern Russia, comes a month after border clashes that left 286 dead, the highest since the 2020 war over control of the Nagorno-Karabakh region, which is the subject of a dispute between two former Soviet republics with 1990s. According to the Kremlin, the meeting was devoted to discussing agreements brokered by Russia last year and “additional measures to strengthen stability and security” in the region. In the fall of 2020, the war between Armenia and Azerbaijan claimed the lives of more than 6,500 people on both sides and ended in a military defeat for Armenia and a peace agreement brokered by Moscow.
